e-Xstream engineering, part of Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division, has introduced new simulation and virtual manufacturing capabilities that enable users to analyse the production cost of polymer-based additive manufacturing parts against conventional processes, and continuously improve their virtual engineering processes by validating the composite’s microstructure with CT scans of manufactured parts.

Trademark Plastics, Inc. (TPI) specializing in custom injection molding has partnered with Zeiss. TPI has incorporated Zeiss’s METROTOM 800 (CT) as the latest in quality assurance technology to perform measuring and inspection functions. The Zeiss METROTOM is an industrial computed tomography system for measuring and inspecting complete components made of plastic or light metal.

Because the materials needed to make a catalytic converter are very expensive, manufacturers need a precise way to analyses, optimise and check the quality of the core substrate’s multiple wash coat. They also need to be able to monitor any real-time changes or trends as they develop in their manufacturing process.  This gives them the tools to control and optimise their usage of high-price materials and thus minimise any waste.

With an optimized target design and the internal cooling, the new  CT Plus product line allows continuous scanning at highest power and voltages up to 300 kV.

The industrial usage of X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) is a relatively recent development. The technical demands, and the costs of acquisition and operation of the equipment, meant that for many years this method of quality control was the preserve of only the largest companies with the deepest pockets.
